VF-6 Squadron was formed when VF-1B and VF-8B merged on July 1, 1937. VF-6 was
one of the first to receive the new Grumman F3F-3. The F3F series was affectionately
nicknamed “The Flying Barrel” and was considered very ugly but it didn’t take long for
people to see the beauty of the entire package. At the time VF-6 was assigned to the
USS Enterprise that painted her aircraft blue for ease of identification. The last F3F-3
was flown by VMF-211 on October 10, 1941. On July 15, 1943 VF-6 (Shooting Stars)
swapped designations with VF-3 (Felix the Cat Squadron) and this was the beginning of
a 3 year feud. Both squadrons claimed Felix as their mascot until November 1946 when
VF-6 was decommissioned.
